WELCOME TO THE JOURNEY
You may have heard several terms used to identify homeschooling: home education, homeschool, or home learning. Nevertheless, all these terms represent a group of parents who educate or teach their children in the environment of the home. In Tennessee, according to statute 49-6-3050, a homeschool is a school conducted by parent(s) or legal guardians for their own children. While academic and religious reasons dominate the motivations for homeschooling, other reasons as diverse as dissatisfaction with the public schools or a desire for better test results inspire parents to homeschool.

Often, families that are considering homeschooling have no idea what homeschooling looks like or how it works on a day to day basis. Questions abound. Can my child really learn without being taught by a "professional" teacher? What are the state required qualifications for being a homeschool family? What does a day look like? Indeed, homeschooling is never exactly the same from family to family. Some take their children's natural interest and curiosity in a topic and use that as a foundation for exploring math or science, history, etc. A great advantage of homeschooling is that it can be conducted at the child's individual pace and style of learning. It can be very structured, exclusively use textbooks and follow the scope and sequence just as an institutional school would. But "school" does not have to take place at the kitchen table from 8:30 till 3:30, in the home. It may occur under a tree in the back yard, in the kitchen while preparing lunch or in a designated homeschool room.

For most homeschoolers, homeschooling is more than just an educational alternative. It is often a specific conviction and involves a specific approach to life. Homeschoolers consider it a privilege to be able to do what they believe is best in providing a quality education for their children.
